The official New Mexico state flag features a red sun symbol, known as a Zia sun, on a field of yellow. The Zia sun has four groups of four rays each, which represent the four seasons, four cardinal directions, four times of day and four stages of life.
The color yellow is said to symbolize the sun and the color red the blood of the Native American warriors. The flag was officially adopted in 1925 and it's a symbol of New Mexico's unique culture, heritage, and its connection to the natural world.
